The Hartwick Women’s Lacrosse team improves to 3-0 after an undefeated weekend at Wright Stadium. The two wins over Marywood University (Scranton, PA) and SUNY Maritime (Throggs Neck, NY) also helped bump the Hawks to a 16th place ranking on Laxpower.com among all the remaining 208 DIII teams.
Eleven of the team’s 18 players helped net 47 points (37 goals and 10 assists) through the victories. The Hawks were led by freshman, Brittany McCabe, who collected eight goals and three assists on the team’s perfect weekend. Junior captain, Brittany LaVaute, chipped in six goals and two assists, picked up three groundballs and caused five turnovers, while fellow junior classmate, Hannah Kennedy, came off the bench on Friday scoring two goals and helping on another. Saturday Kennedy started and contributed three goals and an assist to cap her weekend. Sophomore, Ryan McGovern, was pivotal for the blue on Saturday with her three goals, one assist, one draw control and caused turnover. Emily Walsh, Erin Doyle, Ali Sisco, Erica Scicchitano, Aly Davis and Meg Luce all collected at least one goal and/or assist through the team’s wins.
On defense, two-year captain, Bianca Gianfrate, picked up seven groundballs and caused five turnovers to protect the Hawks’ cage Friday and Saturday. The other members of Gianfrate’s defensive unit, senior Jessica Kenna, sophomore Lindsay Zweigenhaft, and freshmen duo Morgan Galipeau and Kiersten Racela all picked up groundballs to aid Hartwick’s transition game. Sophomore Kate O’Shea caused a turnover in transition.
Senior goalkeeper, Jen Kaye, was huge for the Hawks especially on Friday night. Even though our defense gave up 17 free-position shots, Kaye only let in six of those shots. She finished the game with 13 saves (84%), four groundballs and caused one turnover. Riding her win from the day before, Kaye, a former midfielder stopped three Privateer shots before taking the field, causing a turnover and scoring a goal. Freshman Grace Suttell, defended the pipes when Kaye was on the field and only let in one goal.
We had a fun and warm tailgate after our game against SUNY Maritime with player’s families and a handful of recruits who visited for the weekend.
We will chase our fourth win on Wednesday at Wells College.
