Where Are They Now? The Hartwick Lacrosse Alumni Edition

Julie Duffy is a 2007 graduate of Hartwick College, where she was a member of the women’s lacrosse team for 4 years. She started all 16 games during her junior year, helping the team win the NYSWCAA championship. Sidelined by an injury during her sophomore season, she served as a student assistant coach, assisting with practices and recruiting, which led her to seek the Bay State Games position. She made her coaching debut during the summer of 2005, guiding the Western Massachusetts team in the Bay State Games. During her 3-year stint, she led the Western Massachusetts team to a gold medal in 2006 and a silver medal in 2007.

Duffy came to Ohio Wesleyan from Ithaca College, where she served as an assistant coach. Julie Duffy returns for her third season as the head coach of the Ohio Wesleyan women’s lacrosse team. Last season, the Bishops went 11-6 overall, finishing one win short of the school record for victories in a season, and qualified for the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. In 2009, her first season as a head coach, Duffy guided the Bishops to a 7-7 record.

Why did you choose Hartwick and what make you play for HCWL? I fell in love with the school first. I visited on a snowy day and got onto campus in the evening. My dad and I were lost in the gym and took the elevator upstairs and we were looking out on the snowy night and I feel in love with it. Then I met the team and they were so nice. I felt like I was at home and that is how I knew I needed to be at Hartwick.

What is your best memory from Hartwick College Women’s Lacrosse? There are so many, but I think the experience of getting to the ECAC finals was a blast. Post season experience is just a great feeling and fun to say down the road we made it to the finals for our region.

What were some traditions that you had on the team? The Blue and Black game at the end of the season as an inter squad scrimmage. Those were always fun, especially because our coaches played with us. Locker room traditions of different sayings we would say right before we left. The wooden lacrosse stick that was made our sophomore year and has been passed on but signed every year by the incoming freshmen.

What experiences at Hartwick got you to where you are now? So many experiences have. The biggest one though is my sophomore year when I was injured my coach letting me be a "player-coach". It taught me a lot; kept me involved in the program, but made me realized I wanted to continue doing something with lacrosse. Also, my experience in our education program, it taught me about working with people and teaching.

What is your title and position currently? Head Women's Lacrosse Coach, Ohio Wesleyan University

What are your hopes and dreams for the future lacrosse athletes of HCWL? I want to see them getting back to E8's and being competitive in our conference and region. I'm a proud alumnus, but want those that are playing currently to feel what is like to be in post-season and want to get there. There is no better feeling then making it to the NCAA's!

Another Ireland Update with Kenna!

Hello again from the place with the greenest grass!
My time here in the homeland is winding down pretty quickly. Only three weeks left in this beautiful country and as hard as it is to leave, I will be glad to be back in good old New York.
Since last time, I have done MANY more things. I have travelled through the famous Ring of Kerry and believe me, it is, if not more beautiful than people say. The food is spectacular (yes I know a comment about food is not too strange coming from me but hey!). I hiked up a mountain and looked down upon the most beautiful little island of Dingle. I also Irish step danced with a few other girls in my class and performed for everyone else on the trip (yes, it was hilarious). I met the cows who lived outside of my window, we named them and greeted them every morning. It was honestly one of the best experiences I have had in one of the most amazing places in Ireland.
I have also travelled to London and took a ride on the famous London Eye at night. It was nice, but although British accents are intriguing, Ireland is the place for me.
The next and last trip that I will be taking is creeping up into view. I will be travelling to Rome and Florence for my last couple days in Europe. Kind of like a last hoorah! I cannot wait, although it means that a couple days later I will be back on a plane, leaving Ireland. No worries though, I will be back. Not soon, but eventually :)
Tabhair aire!! Which means Take care in Irish-Gaelic!

Kenna's in Ireland!

Greetings from Ireland!!
For those who may not know, my name is Jess Kenna. I am a senior at Hartwick this year and have been studying abroad at University College Cork in Cork, Ireland since September 2010. While I have been here I have seen many amazing places that most people can only dream of going. I have participated in many tourist type activities but also engaged in many local customs and traditions.
Being an international student at UCC has opened many doors for me. I have had the opportunity to learn the native language of Ireland (yes they do speak English but they also speak Irish-Gaelic) as well as learn how to Irish step dance (which is actually a lot harder then expected!). Is the food good? YES! But there are only so many times you can eat ham, cabbage, and mashed potatos in one month. I have also experienced my first encounter with "pudding" as they call it. This is no jello pudding, this is actually a blood pudding made from intestine but nobody wants to hear that so they came up with this great cover of just "pudding." Thankfully I was warned and did not eat it!
While studying at UCC I will also be researching for my senior capstone on the differences in prison densities between the United States and European countries. Taking the time out to travel to other countries has always been a dream of mine and while in Ireland I will be travelling to places such as Prague, Italy, and England.
I will be returning to the good old United States in December of 2010 where I will have a short Christmas break and head right back up to Hartwick to start J-term and finish out my college lacrosse career in the spring of 2011!

Fall Ball Tournament Recap

Fall Ball has finally came to a close this past Saturday and we are already feeling lost without lacrosse! Saturday was our fall ball play day and we traveled to Scranton, PA to take on Wilkes, Mount St. Mary’s, and Marywood University. The tournament was set up so each team played each other half-field 7v7 for 20 minutes. After we got all of our nerves out, we finally relaxed and played some sick lacrosse. We played 3 games and then braked for lunch (Thanks Mr. Zweigenhaft!). With food in our system and an hour of rest for our bodies, it was time to take on the 3 teams once again in a full field scrimmage. Even though there were no official stats, we played AWESOME for the first time together, scoring more goals than our opponents! Both coaches are extremely happy with everyone’s dedication, participation, and loyalty to the team during fall ball and are SO EXCITED for season to begin! TURN IT AROUND 2011!

Start to Fall Ball

Well, Fall Ball is upon us! We FINALLY started last Monday with wonderful fitness testing. Our scores we’re good but there is definite room for improvement. We are fitness testing every Monday, and hopefully improve each week. We started out this week with basic body position and played without sticks! Three more weeks until our PLAYDAY! On Saturday, October 9, 2010 we’ll compete at the Lacrosse for Autism charity event hosted by Marywood University.

Coach Dell is now a Mrs!!

I don’t even know where to start! July 31st I got married and it seems like it was years ago! Like many brides, I had been planning my wedding day for as long as I could remember and it ended up being the perfect day and was better than I ever imagined!
One of the most fun parts of the wedding was showing off my wedding gown. My mom and I decided before I bought my dress that only she and I would know what the dress looked like. Not even my bridesmaids or close friends saw my wedding dress until my wedding day. I loved that; it was just another thing that added to the anticipation of the day.
I asked my three best friends, the three As: Amanda, Anita and Ashley, to all be my matrons of honor. Since I do not have a sister, it was only natural for me to ask them since I was the maid of honor in each of their weddings.
My husband, Chris, and I were engaged one week shy of two years and previous to that we dated for almost four years. He works here at Hartwick in the athletic department too, which is super convenient since we are on the same schedule. Now, in our spare time we are getting ready to paint the rooms in our house that we bought in 2008. Life is good here in Oneonta for us!

Awards fall on women’s lacrosse players as 2010 wraps up

A trio of Hartwick College women's lacrosse players were recognized as the Empire 8 announced its 2010 All-Conference teams. Sophomore midfielder Brittany LaVaute and sophomore defender Emily Piedigrossi each garnered E8 Honorable Mention. Junior Hannah Kennedy was selected to the Sportswoman of the Year Team.
Brittany LaVaute led the Hawks in several offensive categories this season including goals scored, 29, free-position goals, 11, assists, 9, and points, 38. She was the only player on the team to score in every game this year, including a career-best six goals versus Elmira College. LaVaute also contributed 30 draw controls 23 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. LaVaute also earned team MVP for the 2010 season.
Emily Piedigrossi played as a defender and midfielder throughout the season for Hartwick starting all 13 games. She contributed to the 'Wick offense with four goals and two assists. Piedigrossi recorded 12 caused turnovers which ranked 3rd on the team and added 16 ground balls and 14 draws.

Kennedy scored 15 goals and dished out six assists this season to bring her two-year total to 29 goals and 10 assists. Kennedy also was the 2010 recipient of the selective Carrie Fridmann Memorial Award.
Three Hartwick women's lacrosse players, Bianca Gianfrate, Jen Kaye and Emily Walsh each earned IWLCA Academic Merit Roll distinction. The group was among 281 student-athletes in DIII women’s lacrosse to earn this high honor.
Gianfrate, a three-year starter and junior captain this past season for Hartwick, is one of the Hawks' top defenders and has played every minute of every game since arriving here as a freshman. She led Hartwick in caused turnovers this season and was third in ground balls. She is double majoring in Political Science and Psychology at 'Wick.
Kaye, also a captain last season, has been the Hawks' starting goalkeeper for two of her three seasons. The junior from Altamont, NY has registered 303 saves in over 1500 minutes in cage and has picked up 121 ground balls and 46 caused turnovers. She has also tallied 14 times and added three assists over her career and was named ECAC and Empire 8 Goalie of the Week in 2009. Kaye, a Business major, is also entering her final season as a Hartwick field hockey player this fall.
Walsh, an Art History major, has been one of the Hawks' top scorers in her first two seasons with the program. She led 'Wick in scoring in her first year with the team, tallying 24 goals and five assists, and added 17 goals and five assists this past spring.
Along with being recognized through the IWLCA, this group along with sophomore Hannah Kennedy collected the Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award for Academic Distinction through Hartwick College.
