Name: Em Walsh
Position: Attack
Year/ Major: Senior/ Art History major, Graphic Communications minor
Hometown/ HS: Cortland, NY/ Cortland H.S.
Birthday: September 25th

Why Hartwick? Hartwick had a great atmosphere that allowed me to discover what I love and what type of person I want to be.

Favorite part of Hartwick Lacrosse: The second family we gain through our teammates that only becomes stronger throughout the season, the constant support and desire to acheive a common goal, and also our training trip...obvi.

Hopes for the season:
Most importantly, I hope to grow and develop as a team-one in sync unit.  I hope to become close and create bonds with my teammates that will last forever.  I also hope for success within our conference. This doesn’t mean I expect to be number 1, although I 100% believe it’s possible.  I do, however, expect our team to give our best efforts every single day. I hope that by doing so we will be able to prove so many people, programs, and teams wrong. I hope that this year, as a team, we take a stand to not allow ourselves to fall in a place where others expect us to be. To not let their doubts effect our effort and success. And I hope we do this with pride.

Favorite part of being a captain:
Being a captain isn’t easy. There is a lot of pressure in terms of aiding in the team’s overall success and sometimes that results in stress. HOWEVER, despite all of this, I absolutely love it. I enjoy the responsibility. It’s good for me. As a captain, I deal with many situations that translate into real life grown up situations- I’m learning and growing and maturing!-  it’s scary and great at the same time. I also love being someone my teammates can talk to. Knowing that they trust me is one of the best feelings in the world.  I’m so glad I can be there for them in that way.  Most of all, I just love being a leader on this team. It’s that simple. Our team is a group of wonderful girls, with big hearts and all the potential in the world. I’m proud to be a part of the unit and proud to call myself one of their leaders.

Meet Senior Captain Hannah Kennedy!

Next up on our team introductions is Hannah Kennedy, a senior attacker from Avon, Connecticut. Kennedy enters her first season serving as captain for the Hawks.

Name: Hannah Kennedy
Position: Attack
Year/ major: Senior/ History, Education, and Special Education
Hometown/ H.S.: Avon, CT/ Avon High School

Why Hartwick?
I was recruited for lacrosse and I love the team and atmosphere.

Favorite part of Hartwick Lacrosse:
The team

What makes this program special?
As a four-year player, it is absolutely amazing how far this team has come since I was a freshman. Not only has the team improved its skill level, but academics as well. One thing that is extremely valuable to me as a Division III athlete is that my academics are more important than my sport. Our coaches help in every way possible to make sure that not only do we graduate as extremely strong lacrosse players, but that we are also prepared to enter the job market as young women who are ready to take on whatever comes their way.

Goals for the year:
As a captain, it is my goal to make sure that we dominate on the field (how could we not with our rocking team this year?) and in the classroom.

Name: Brittany McCabe
Position: Attack
Year: Sophomore/ Biology
Hometown/ H.S. : Manorville, NY/ Eastport-South Manor HS
Birthday: December 6th

Why Hartwick? Because of the great bio program, the girls on the team, the campus, and Coach's persistance
Favorite part of Hartwick Lacrosse: Team unity

Hopes for the season:
My immediate goal for the team is to develop team unity, a knowledge and awareness amongst the team that we have to support each other on and off the field.  One of my many goals is to develop hard, honest effort and trust in each other. I believe this will foster a winning attitude as a byproduct.  We also need to promptly integrate the very talented core of freshman into the team concept and make them feel they are welcome additions, just as the upperclassmen did for our freshman crew. I want to incorporate some of the qualities that the leaders last year had, their wisdom, pride, competitive perseverance, and the chip on their shoulder that festered from game to game. They wanted to “turn it around,” improve the program and leave behind a developing team that won. Wouldn’t it be great if we carried all of those attributes into this season, made everybody forget the records from years prior, and brought some real excitement to Wright Stadium with our winning attitudes and newly discovered swag?

Fall Ball Wrap-up

Hi Fans!

Thank you all for your support this fall. On Sunday, we concluded our fall ball with a tournament at RPI. This served as the culmination of all of our hard work during the three weeks of practices! Our players faught hard and learned a lot about themselves as players and the work that needs to be done for us to have our best season yet!! We lucked out with beautiful weather, although the 80 degree heat caught all teams by surprise after a somewhat cool fall.

At the end of the day, we finished with two ties and two tight losses, but our progress was what we were most pleased with. Our 8 freshman impressed the coaches in their first real game experience, and with many returners we are excited about the team's potential! We have all the tools we need for a great 2012 season- now it's just putting it all together!!

For now, we head into the off season where the girls will work hard to get themselves where they all need to be to make 2012 a memorable year. With hard work and focus this team can do great things! As a coaching staff, we can't wait to see where the team is at in January when we reunite with the team.

LET'S GO HAWKS!

Wallace joins the Hartwick Women’s Lacrosse program after graduating from Dartmouth College in June, 2011 with a B.A. in Music. A native of Shoreham, NY, Wallace competed in cross country, basketball, and lacrosse at Shoreham-Wading River High School. Season Recap

The 2011 season showed great potential for us in the coming years. Although we finished 7-8, the program’s second highest win total in a season, we were just 5 goals away from a 10-5 finish. We proved we can compete and we hope to build on this as we take on the 2012 season!
At the end of the season, four Hartwick players garnered All-Conference honors. Junior Brittany LaVaute, Freshman Brittany McCabe, and Freshman Morgan Galipeau earned Honorable Mention honors while Junior Hannah Kennedy was selected to the Sportswoman of the Year team. It was LaVaute’s second appearance on the All-Conference team after leading the team in caused turnovers (22) and was third in both ground balls (32) and draw controls (26). McCabe made her first appearance on the team after finishing her rookie season with 43 goals and 17 assists for 60 points, leading the team in all three categories. She also led all Empire 8 freshmen in goals scored, assists, and points in conference play, while also being named team MVP. Galipeau also made her All-Conference debut after starting 13 games in her first season at Hartwick. She ranked 4th on the team in groundballs (31) and tied for fourth in caused turnovers (14). Kennedy was elected the team’s representative for the Women’s Lacrosse Sportsman of the Year Team for the second straight year. This award honors a student-athlete who competes with honor and integrity. Congrats girls!!
This summer, our team was named to the IWLCA Academic Squad. This award recognizes teams who have achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or above for the 2010-2011 academic year. We couldn’t be more proud of our girls; only a quarter of all D3 programs received such an honor!
We have all been hard at work this summer and can’t wait to start up the 2011-2012 school year! The campus is starting to buzz with excitement as students return in time for classes on Tuesday. Soon fall ball will be underway!

HCWLax 3-0; first time since 1997

The Hartwick Women’s Lacrosse team improves to 3-0 after an undefeated weekend at Wright Stadium. The two wins over Marywood University (Scranton, PA) and SUNY Maritime (Throggs Neck, NY)  also helped bump the Hawks to a 16th place ranking on Laxpower.com among all the remaining 208 DIII teams.
Eleven of the team’s 18 players helped net  47 points (37 goals and 10 assists) through the victories. The Hawks were led by freshman, Brittany McCabe, who collected eight goals and three assists on the team’s perfect weekend. Junior captain, Brittany LaVaute, chipped in six goals and two assists, picked up three groundballs and caused five turnovers, while fellow junior classmate, Hannah Kennedy, came off the bench on Friday scoring two goals and helping on another. Saturday Kennedy started and contributed three goals and an assist to cap her weekend. Sophomore, Ryan McGovern, was pivotal for the blue on Saturday with her three goals, one assist, one draw control and caused turnover.  Emily Walsh, Erin Doyle, Ali Sisco, Erica Scicchitano, Aly Davis and Meg Luce all collected at least one goal and/or assist through the team’s wins.
On defense, two-year captain, Bianca Gianfrate, picked up seven groundballs and caused five turnovers to protect the Hawks’ cage Friday and Saturday. The other members of Gianfrate’s defensive unit, senior Jessica Kenna, sophomore Lindsay Zweigenhaft, and freshmen duo Morgan Galipeau and Kiersten Racela all picked up groundballs to aid Hartwick’s transition game. Sophomore Kate O’Shea caused a turnover in transition.
Senior goalkeeper, Jen Kaye, was huge for the Hawks especially on Friday night. Even though our defense gave up 17 free-position shots, Kaye only let in six of those shots. She finished the game with 13 saves (84%), four groundballs and caused one turnover. Riding her win from the day before, Kaye, a former midfielder stopped three Privateer shots before taking the field, causing a turnover and scoring a goal. Freshman Grace Suttell, defended the pipes when Kaye was on the field and only let in one goal.
We had a fun and warm tailgate after our game against SUNY Maritime with player’s families and a handful of recruits who visited for the weekend.
We will chase our fourth win on Wednesday at Wells College.
